What Is Mindfulness?
You’ve heard all the hype… but what exactly is it and why do you need it?
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present.
We all know the feeling. We are triggered by a comment, email, text message, side look… and automatically we spin into a state of anger, rage or anxiety. It feels uncontrollable, as if we were a victim to the current situation. We then move from moment to moment constantly looking forward or backward, and by the end of the day we are completely exhausted and depleted. And then the cycle continues.
But what if I told you that there is a practice to break this cycle?
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment. Being present means that there is an awareness of our thoughts and feelings, and a deep understanding that we are not a victim to these thoughts and feelings.
Mindfulness does not mean that we erase these thoughts and emotions; rather, we approach them from a calm, controlled mind. There are literally hundreds of mindfulness practices, and the key is for each person to identify a technique that works for them and their lifestyles.
“One practical way to do this is to look at other people and ask yourself if you are really seeing them or just your thoughts about them.”
